Muir Elementary Garden

 Mission

We use our garden to facilitate a deeper understanding of the natural world while simultaneously providing community building and opportunities centered around academic subjects, creativity, discovery, healthy foods and sustainable living.

Garden Purpose

• Gives students knowledge about where their food comes from
• Helps students gain more passion for nature and sustainability
• Invites investigation and experimentation
• Students become explorers and scientists in the garden
• Outdoor “science lab” to study ecology, gravity, weather, geology, history, math, and agriculture
• Gives students and teachers a concrete way to connect directly with nature without having to leave school grounds
• The vegetables, fruits, and herbs growing there are available for sampling and help promote healthy eating lifestyles
• Enriches experiential learning by providing endless opportunities for learning that is hands-on and student directed

Connecting the Community

• Promotes myriad opportunities to make connections within the Muir community, as well as to the broader community
• Because the garden brings the community together, the students will learn more about the importance of community as well as the responsibility to take care of the environment
• Leads to shared commitment and leadership from all areas of the community
• As we grow the garden, our community will grow stronger
